JEDDAH: Mazen Batterjee, chairman of Al-Birr charitable society in Jeddah, has commended the role played by the media in finding the relatives of a lost Filipino girl, named Sameera.

“A delegation from the Consulate General of Philippines visited Al-Birr after seeing media reports and confirmed that the child belonged to a Filipino family,” he said.

A consulate official said the girl’s grandmother had announced that the girl was missing eight months ago through a blog.

The girl is now living in the society’s Dar Al-Zahra shelter and is in good condition, said Najla Al-Yami, manager of the society’s women’s wing.

Police found the girl abandoned in Sairafi Mall in a trolley. At that time she was one-and-a-half years old, and taken to hospital for necessary treatment.

For the last year, Sameera has been taken care of by Al-Birr. “We’ll hand over the girl to her relatives through official parties,” Al-Yami said.
